Maths
At Fingringhoe, we want every child to believe that they can be successful mathematicians. Our approach is rooted in the belief that mathematics is something to understand, explore and enjoy, rather than simply a collection of facts to remember. We encourage children to be curious, to make connections, to explain their thinking and, importantly, to have the courage to persevere when something feels difficult.
Our vision, rooted in Joshua 1:9, reminds us to ‘be strong and courageous’. This is particularly relevant in mathematics, where children are encouraged to embrace challenge, learn from mistakes and develop the confidence to try different approaches. We celebrate the process of thinking, reasoning and problem-solving as much as the answer itself.
We draw on the expertise and resources of White Rose Maths and the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM), alongside the professional expertise and support of colleagues through the Venn Essex Maths Hub. This ensures that our teaching is informed by current research and best practice, with a strong focus on fluency, reasoning, problem-solving and developing deep, connected understanding.
We believe that all children can learn and enjoy mathematics. Through careful sequencing, practical and visual representations, mathematical talk and opportunities to reason and solve problems, we aim to develop confident, resilient mathematicians who are willing to have a go, explain their ideas and not be afraid of getting it wrong.
Our ultimate aim is for children to leave Fingringhoe not only with secure mathematical knowledge and skills, but with the confidence, resilience and courage to tackle unfamiliar problems and keep going when the answer isn’t immediately obvious.
